Understand the variations.
Early coupé
The original Diablo arrived in 1990 with rear-wheel drive. An early car is a distinct starting point for a buyer’s search.
VT
The VT introduced all-wheel drive in 1993. Establish the exact version and specification before comparing it with another Diablo.
Roadster
The open-body configuration brings its own ownership considerations. Include the roof and associated fittings in the inspection brief.
SV, special editions and 6.0
These names warrant separate consideration. Verify the particular version and original equipment instead of relying on exterior cues.
Start with the version, then the car.
The Diablo developed substantially over its life. Body style, drivetrain, equipment and later changes all affect what a buyer is looking at. Two cars under the same model name may represent quite different points in that story.
Write down the claimed specification before studying the history. Ask which documents support the model description and which features were added or changed later.
Special editions need a paper trail.
For a claimed limited-series car, ask for evidence tying the chassis to that series and for records of its original equipment. Parts, paintwork and visual details can be useful clues, but are not a substitute for establishing identity.
Make the specialist part of the search.
Give the inspector the available maintenance file and details of any modifications in advance. Ask what their inspection will cover, where further investigation might be needed and what access the seller must provide.
A car that has spent time in storage raises a different set of questions from one in regular use. Neither history should be reduced to mileage alone. Build the discussion around documented work and observed condition.
Three questions to take further.
- Which version is this, and what evidence supports its original specification?
- What work followed any periods of limited use or storage?
- What does an independent specialist need to check before you decide?
